Gene H. Hall, Jr. started Red Oak Excavating, Inc. in 1986. He started the company with a 450 John Deere Bulldozer given to him by his father, Gene Hall, Sr., a tobacco farmer and warehouse owner. He began by clearing land and doing waterways for local farmers. Projects grew to residential and commercial sites as well as being certified by the Virginia Department of Transportation for highway construction projects. Due to the growth of the company, a 12,500 sq ft office space and full shop was built to house Red Oak Excavating.

Gene met his wife Sarah in 1995 and she quickly became a partner within Red Oak Excavating. They have worked together tirelessly over the years to build the company to what it is now. Currently, Gene runs the business with the help of their daughter Michelle and granddaughter Maddy who soon wants to follow in their footsteps. Gene & Sarah hope that Red Oak Excavating will be a legacy they can leave behind and be in business for many more years to come.
